There was a time for the musicians to take a break during the Phil Wickham concert. Phil took some time and talked about Compassion International and the work they do – “Releasing children from poverty in Jesus’ name.” Phil talked about one particular girl that they have sponsored for several years. It was very touching to see a video of her and her family. Each child needs to know that they are known and cared for. Phil was proud to partner with them in bringing others to Christ and invited each of us to get involved if we could. Well, we can. Pretty much anyone attending a concert probably has $40 extra to spare each month.
Brian looked up Compassion International online to see what their rating is as a nonprofit. They have an excellent rating for the way they use funds. I remember their headquarters in Colorado Springs. It was a large building near Indus, so I would see it often although I was not familiar with their mission.
Phil asked people who were willing to sponsor a child to raise their hands. Someone would bring them a card with a child’s picture and information on it to sponsor them. I didn’t want to get just any random child; I wanted the child I was supposed to be paired with and I fully expected to receive some sort of sign from God for the child meant for our family.
After the concert, we walked to a table covered with different children’s cards that had their pictures and information. But I wasn’t looking at pictures. I was looking at birthdates because that is how God talks to me. A way that is very clear and concrete. And I found the one. July 15th – my son’s birthday. I picked up the card – Yes, this is the one.
His name is David – the same as Brian & Preston’s middle names. I probably would not have selected this card based on the photo alone. I am grateful that God knows my communication style and again and again shows me that things are arranged ahead of time for me to know I am in the right place at the right time doing the right thing. So, we have welcomed a baby and his family as part of our family! It’s a boy! David from Kenya.
